One of my objectives is to explore what “street” photography is in this regional town. Landscape and street tend to merge in such areas where we live with the vast tracts of land surrounding us, enveloping us. I find this aspect of photography in country towns to be inspiring. There’s a creative opportunity here.
There’s always a story in this type of image I find. To be fair, that’s my background - storytelling, so it naturally informs my photographic practice. But coming from a professional writing practice, I love how an image transcends words, and breaks through the language barriers. It offers so much open space to the viewer to explore their own meanings, their own language. “Evocative”, I suppose would be the word.
This is a tourist town. It markets itself in particular ways, aesthetically speaking. My challenge to myself is to think about ways to frame scenes, and capture something different. To show how the photographer can bring something new to the table … and all that has really changed, is the light, the weather, and a willingness to see things from a new perspective.
And let’s face it, there is always something lurking beneath any glossy surface.
