OUTBACK.

I came to the outback of South Australia late in life. I’d mistakenly thought it was difficult to get there, and so much more remote than it actually is. It is phenomenal both in a literal sense … in that one feels it, lives it, as well as being extraordinarily beautiful. This is the traditional lands of the Nukunu people. I’d expected to feel daunted, slightly ill at ease in this vast and ancient place for it is, on scale, overwhelmingly large. Instead I felt calm. Tranquil and at peace. On a foggy morning I drove out to an empty gravel road and enjoyed the dawn. There’s always something intimate about being alone at/with dawn. I find it grounds me to the earth. Reminds me of something I have forgotten or locked away. I am part of this. Somehow, I am part of this wonder unfolding before me.
